Irene Measures and her husband have lived in Pirton for just over 21 years. Art was her best subject at school but it was not until she retired that she was able to start painting and drawing again.

Extra-mural lessons at North Herts College, Letchworth, whetted her appetite for more challenges and this led to a 2-year part time Access Course at Hertfordshire University. She was then accepted on the 5-year part-time Fine Arts (BA Hons.) Degree Course and is now completing the fifth and final year.

Always an animal lover, her work nowadays focuses on ecological issues. She is particularly concerned about the plight of endangered species and the relentless damaged caused to their habitat by humans.

"We're drowning in our own shit!"

Two photos from a series taken of an installation similar to the one which I will be showing at my degree show in June. The installation is made from disposable nappies and built to represent a padded cell. I feel that I am the only person who is protesting (without being heard) about the fact that dirty disposable nappies are being deposited in land fill sites. The raw sewage, together with the plastic and other chemicals contained within these nappies are polluting the water. The light, which represents the world, is fitted with a dimmer switch. Eventually, the light goes out.
