To raise money to have the memorial cleaned, the surrounding trees trimmed and the area fenced, a group from Pirton and the surrounding villages are going to walk from Pirton to the nation's war memorial, the Cenotaph, in London's Whitehall. Approx 12 people, from Pirton, Clifton and Langford will undertake the walk this summer, on June 6th and 7th walking across country to Hatfield on the first day, and then down to central London on the second day. The overall distance is 43 miles, which is considerable lower than the age of some of the walkers!!!!!! There may still be places available to join the walkers and raise money - if you are interested email cenotaphmemorialwalk@pirton.org.uk. The aim is to raise money for the memorial and therefore all the walkers will be sponsored, with sponsorship forms being available from this website and in key locations around the village, including the village shop and both the village pubs. You can sponsor the group using forms from these locations, or by using the form here. Individual donations can also be made direct to Tony French, at 6 St Mary's Close, Pirton, SG5 3RG. Any cheques should be payable to PHSG (Pirton Heritage Support Group), but sponsors will be contacted after the event for payment. Children from the village school entered into a competition and not only designed the groups logo, shown on this site, but also wrote two prayers, one to be read at the village memorial before we leave and a second to be read at the Cenotaph during a wreath laying ceremony when we arrive. Your support is much needed, so please sponsor the group, even if it is only for a few pounds, so we can continue to keep the village memorial in a condition befitting those it honours. Further details of the walk, with the start and projected finish times will be available here nearer the time and anyone who wants to come along to see the group off from Pirton, or be there when they arrive at the Cenotaph will be very welcome. For more information, please contact Mick Child on 07824-565-767.
