Introduction

We had long thought of moving to or at least living in France. Some fool suggested to my lovely wife that it would be a good idea to run a vineyard and this became the received wisdom as to what I should do. To cut a very long story short (details on request if you dare!), we bought a winery and leased 30 odd hectares of land of which 18 are down to vines (the rest sublet for grass). With the winery came a chateau in need of renovation (the roof is good but the rest is crap - a french word meaning in need of a thorough rebuild ) and a 1 bedroom flat which is comfortably big enough for us 2. Hence currently all visitors have to stay in the local hotel, but next year, rumour has it, we shall be in the chateau, with a couple of spare bedrooms and the flat let out as a gite to help pay for the restoration!
