Subject: Re: Genealogy - Pirton Website-Kingsley
(Added 1/5/2004 - apologies I missed this information, if anyone supplies information and doesn't see it on the website please let me know, I do make mistakes - obviously!)

Hello Jonty,

Towards the end of the message to Rita dated December 1 2003, reference is made to a Charlotte Kingsley born Pirton who married John Griffin 5th Aug 1823 at Tring.

A daughter of this John Griffin and Charlotte Kingsley and named Esther, but k/as Polly in the family, married Thomas Kingsley Stockbridge on 15th April 1864 at Tring. This Thomas Kingsley Stockbridge was the son of Thomas Stockbridge and Hannah Kingsley who was a sister of the aforementioned Charlotte. A cousin marriage, and I have a written record of that marriage by another cousin (my grandfather) who was present.

Hannah and Charlotte were two of nine children, (of whom seven were apparently born at Pirton,) of Thomas Kingsley and Elizabeth Porter. They are my 2g/grandparents. If anyone is particularly interested I can give details of almost all of the descendents of this family up to twins born 3 months ago!

However, there is a problem in specifically identifying the antecedents of this Thomas and Elizabeth. They were farmers, and shortly before the last two children were born they moved to High Heath Farm at Codicote.
Before their move it appears that all the time they were farming at Pirton they were members of Back Street Chapel in Hitchin where their children were baptised.

I cannot find their marriage. My family have often assumed it was Hitchin at either Back Street or Tilehurst Street Chapels, because they were staunch noncomformsts. Thomas could afford to furnish his table with silver, and there is slight evidence that it was bought in Hitchin. However as a Pirton family it is more likely that Thomas may have been a brother of John Kingsley who married Mary Furrian. It is also possible that this is the Thomas who is mentioned as a witness at Kingsley marriages.

If anyone can throw light on the parents of either Thomas Kingsley or Elizabeth Porter, I would be delighted to hear from them.

regards

Henry Garratt (email address)
