Searching for information of ancestors: Garratt, Kingsley & Porter

11th July 2005

Sadly I have been told by Kerry Ciesiolka that Henry recently died she says "Henry Garratt gave us all a lot to think about and when he was wrong said so , even if it meant eating crow as we say here." (Australia).

Henry's son in Law wrote "He died, in hospital, on Thursday 30th June at 4:20 in the afternoon; he was surrounded by his close family at the time."

Hi Jonty
I'm in contact with Henry Garratt and he asked me to pass this information on to you:

Two days ago, an odd remark by someone who had got their part of the Kingsley family tree wrong because they had not looked at some items carefully, set me thinking.

I went over all the details that Kazza (in Australia) and myself have collected for the period 1650 to 1750 and suddenly the jig-saw fitted.
The Pirton Kingsleys all descend from the grandfather of the John1758 who was also a John. He was born in Rushden was a member of Tilehurst Street Bapt and took a farm at Pirton. He had his children in Pirton but he is buried at Tilehurst Street.

Very interesting, but the GALER family in Pirton appears also to have started in Rushden. That is somethng that one of your local Historians might like to look at to see if there is a specific reason.

All the best

Hello Jonty

On the GERISH list I have noticed there is a Mary Kingsley died ?1823 under reference q.

This is Mary Furrian, born 1760 and bapt at Pirton 23 March 1760. She married John Kingsley 3 May 1780 at Pirton and her buriel date (see Parish records) is 10 March 1824, so guess she died a day or so earlier.
She is/was my 3gt/grandmother.

Regards
Henry Garratt

Hello Jonty,

My 2g/grandfather Thomas Kingsley (a Yeoman farmer) who married Elizabeth Porter lived for a while, at least, in Pirton.    His daughter Susannah (my g/grandmother) was born in Pirton 13 Aug 1817 but she was bapt. 12 Oct 1817 at Back Street Independent Chapel in Hitchin.

The family were ardent non-comformists and there are records in HALS that indicate that around this period one of the Kingsleys (suspect it was either Thomas or William) were holding chapel meetings in their house in Pirton.

Regards

Henry Garratt

Other information to clarify the above

Hello Jonty,

Put the information on web site if you wish although adding my name etc, is a bit of an intrusion on my part!!! You see, the above is quoting from a note given me several years ago by HALS who were apparently themselves quoting from Pirton Parish Records of some sort! I suggest this is a lead for a local historian to investigate before it goes on your site (I publish because it might help someone - Jonty) as I guess there is a much fuller story here than I know about. It came to me as a side issue as I have published the history of the GARRATT family in Hertfordshire and they are linked to the Kingsleys and Titmus families that you have noted on your site, and I was considering the records of Back Street Chapel.

Quite happy to be added to list. I am a member of the Herts Pop and Fam Hist Soc and Codicote Local Hist Soc and always on the look out for more Hertfordshire family details.

Good luck.

Henry Garratt (one of the few surviving direct male descendents of Thos.Garret the yeoman Stringer of Henlow born circa 1495.)

If you can help in any way or would simply like to get in touch, please email or write at the address above or via me on jontywild@pirton.org.uk
Even if you don't have email, but have a friend or family that do, why not give it a go and contact him that way, you'll be surprised how easy it is! - Jonty
