Jonty,

I hope you received the jpeg of James King's will OK, together with the completed authorisation document, (will appear Pirton Historic Photograph section).  I have looked through my files and at present have come up with only one other that relates directly to Pirton, although I have several for Offley, Lilley and Gravenhurst.

The news item, (will appear Pirton Historic Document section) which I have attached, relates to the sale of some land in Pirton following the death of James King junior in 1898. As the area for sale is 9+ acres, it may be the same land that was listed for James King senior in the 1861 census, although James King junior is shown as farming 22 acres in 1871.

Regards

John Sale

Jonty,

I have attached the jpeg of James KING's will dated 1859, (will appear Pirton Historic Document section) and will forward any other Pirton information I have that may be of interest to you.  In his will James King made a bequest to his daughter Lavinia, and her husband was also mentioned. His forename was Samuel, but I was unable to decipher the surname.  However, from census details I see that Lavinia's married name was LAKE. Would you therefore please amend the 2nd generation of the John King family history I previously sent to show that Lavinia, daughter of James (1) King, married Samuel Lake, not Samuel ?Saln. as written.  I could not find Samuel Lake in the IGI, so I should be grateful if you would also check the censuses for him. Of course, he may have lived outside of Pirton.

Thank you

John Sale

As regards the confusion on the location of the shop, the information I sent was from the LDS transcription of the 1881 census, which did not show the road names. It may well be that the shop was indeed in the High Street and the Alms houses in Crabtree Lane, the two locations being adjacent in the census record as the enumerator listed them in that order during his visit to the village. Maybe the entries in the 1861 and 1871 censuses would clarify the issue.

I looking for information from the censuses of 1861/71 for the following people and their families.

James KING senior (1791-1867) and his wife Charlotte, nee Hipgrave (1797-1869)  and their children:-

Lavinia King (ca1832). I believe she married a man named Samuel whose surname I do not know, so may not be in the census under her maiden name James King junior (1837-1898), later miller at Offley, and his wife Elizabeth Ann, nee Francis (1840-1892). I think their first child was born c1867, so Elizabeth may be under her maiden name in the 1861 census*.

John FRANCIS (no dates) and his wife Elizabeth, nee Mitchell (born Henlow, 1813-1897) and their children:-

Elizabeth Ann Francis* (1840-1892) - married James King junior, see above Mary Francis (1836-1914) - the shopkeeper referred to previously James Francis (1842-1925) - the schoolteacher/geologist referred to previously Also, but of less importance, the brothers and sister of James KING senior, ie:

John, William, Joseph and Ann King, born in the late 1700s.

Thank you for your help,

Regards

Dear Jonty,

While researching my maternal ancestors who came from Pirton, I found your excellent website for the village.  I have already benefited from the churchyard memorial records, and the links to other researchers directed me to the Hipgrave family website where I hope to have a fruitful interchange of information with Anthony Hipgrave.  I now hope that you can help my investigations further, or perhaps direct my enquiries to others who may have the relevant information.

To give you an overview of my Pirton forebears I attach a simple family tree for my maternal grandfather, Frank KING.  This shows my relationships
to my great x3 grandparents of the KING, FRANCIS, WRIGHT and HIPGRAVE families, for the first two of which I have attached preliminary family histories. However, much of the earlier data has been obtained from the IGI, and I have not yet been able to cross check all the details to fully verify the
relationships.  I note from your website that an historical database of Pirton is under development that will contain parish register and census details.  Is any of this information yet available against which my data could be checked?
(Jonty - Not yet this is being undertaken by another site, I will link to it as soon as I hear that it is available!).

I do not have much detail of the lives of my Pirton relations, but some information may be of interest to you.  Although not mentioned in the articles on old Pirton shops, my aunt remembers that Miss Mary FRANCIS (1836-1914) ran a general shop in the village. This is confirmed by her entry in the 1881 census, although this does not give the shop's address. However, her listed neighbours may help to locate the premises. To one side only domestic dwellings are recorded, but on the other side the entries read: William Males, carpenter & publican; Thomas Stapleton, grocer & dealer; George Davis,
butcher & beer seller; then comes Benjamin Crowther at the Boardschools Schoolhouse, followed by a group of Alms Houses. The Pirton entry in Kelly's
directories for 1902, 1908 and 1914 also lists Mary Francis (Miss) as a shopkeeper.  Interestingly the Post Office directory of 1855 shows Mrs Elizabeth Francis as a beer seller & grocer in Pirton. This could be Mary's mother, so maybe she ran the same shop and passed it on to her unmarried daughter.

Mary's brother, James FRANCIS (1842-1925), was born and buried in Pirton but spent most of his life in London where he was a schoolteacher and geologist.  He was a Fellow of the Geological Society and I have some of his collection of fossils and geological specimens, although the best examples were donated to the National History Museum. I have attached some press cuttings about him.  Mary's younger sister, Elizabeth Ann FRANCIS (1840-1892), married my great grandfather James KING (1837-1898). Born in Pirton, James later became the miller at Great Offley with other milling concerns in Hitchen and Gravenhurst.  James's father was also named James (1791-1867). He is recorded as a Husbandman in 1815, as was his brother Joseph KING (Joseph King is also listed as a Pirton farmer in 1855 Post Office directory, but I do not know the location of the farm). Both brothers married daughters of John HIPGRAVE of Pirton; Joseph to Ann in 1814, and James to Charlotte in 1815.

Although I now live in Bournemouth, most of my relations still reside in the Luton/Bedford area. It gives me great pleasure to visit the villages where my forebears grew up, and any extra information you can furnish to flesh out that past will be most welcome.

Congratulations again on maintaining such a full and informative website.
