Dear Jonty

My mother was Evelyn Walker and she was the daughter of Charles and Ellen Walker. I have a copy of a Marriage Certificate for Granddad Walker's wedding to Ellen at Pirton St.Mary's Church on 26th.November 1883 Charles(1860) was the youngest son of George Walker (1816) and Sarah nee Males(1816) and had five five brothers William(1841), James(1843),Samuel(1846) and George(1854) and one sister Charlotte(1847). There may have been a younger son Alfred John(1851 but I can't find any trace of him later The White Horse public house was run by John Walker (1804) and Elizabeth(1801) from before1850 until after 1870 at least. John's grandson also named John (1846) lived there in 1851 and a daughter Ann(1821) lived there in 1861 and appears again in 1871 as Ann Lake.

There do seem to be very many Walkers in Pirton at that time and I suppose mostly inter-related so it gets very complicated but fascinating none the less. I would love to visit Pirton but might have left it too late to walk round the churchyard. I would like to contact David Walker but I am reluctant to do so without his permission. I would like to see a copy of his family tree. Many thanks for a wonderful web-site I thought perhaps that Pirton had been swallowed up by suburbia and I am very glad to hear that it is still so active.

With Best Wishes

Harry Vincent

Additional information October 2003

Sarah Males (1816) married George Walker(1816) on 21st.December 1839 at St.Mary's Church. Pirton Entry No.12 Page 6 in the Parish Registry of Marriages.

Father of bride was Samuel Males a carpenter and the father of the groom was Thomas Walker a labourer.  The witnesses were Charles Males and Henry Males and the service was performed by the Rev.John Kenning Fowler the Curate at that time.

They went on to have the following family:-

William (1841) James(1843) Samuel(1846) Charlotte(1847)

and Charles(1860). There may have been another child Alfred John(1851) but I think he may have died at an early age

Charles Walker was my maternal grandfather so that makes George my great grandfather and Sarah my great grandmother I hope this has been of interest to you, all the birthdates could be out by a year or so but are as accurate as I can get

A lot of the Walkers inter married with other families such as the Handcombes, Lakes, Gazdays and Titmus and it all gets quite complicated in the late 1800's

If you can help in any way or would simply like to get in touch, please email or write at the address above or via me on jontywild@pirton.org.uk
Even if you don't have email, but have a friend or family that do, why not give it a go and contact him that way, you'll be surprised how easy it is! - Jonty
