William Handscombe b.1802 Great Shelford,Cambs
I wondered if there is anyone on the Pirton site, whose ancestry falls within the Handscombe name, that has any connections with the following people:-
Samuel Handscombe, who married a Constance Hatley.
Their son William Handscomb b.1802 in Great Shelford, Cambs, whose consort was a Sarah Francois. William was transported to Australia as a convict in 1823.
Elizabeth Ada Hanscombe, the third child, of William & Sarah, who was born March 1846, NSW, Australia. Elizabeth went on to marry a Joseph Rolfe, who is possibly connected to John Rolfe and Pocahontas.
As my line is of the Hanscombes of Pirton, I wondered if somehow it was possible to back track these people from Cambridgeshire to Hertfordshire. I have struck a brick wall with Samuel Hanscombe so any information would be gratefully received.

It looks like it would be in order for me to correspond with Christine Crawley in Pirton, by letter, rather than email, which I think I will do.
So many thanks and keep on with your wonderful Pirton site. Recently, with help, I have managed to trace my Kingsley line back to 1575.

I think the link here is with Chris Crawley who works in the village shop (wife of Doug). I may be wrong, but I think her parents had to do with the Old Red Lion and her Mum's name was Burton!

Ted bought over a copy of your e-mail
This is Chris's mum and Dad (Ted and Beatrice (Trixie) Burton), used to own the Red Lion.

I think Chris Crawley who lives in Bunyan Close (and works in the village shop) may be able to help as I believe her family lived in the house on the corner by the church that was originally the Red Lion but am not sure whether her family name was Burton.

Ted Burton was one of my men in the tooling division at Vauxhall, he resided in Davis Crescent and his daughter serves it the P/O Shop now, married to Duggie. (Doug Crawley)

Subject: Burtons in Pirton
Hi Jonty,
I wonder if you can help. I am trying to find out about an Edward (Ted)
Burton and his wife Patricia (Trish) Burton.
The only information I have is that they used to have a pub in Pirton in and
around the 1950's. I was told the pub
(now a private dwelling ) was on the corner as you enter the Churchyard.
I have just found that my line crosses with the Burtons and wondered if they fitted in anywhere.

What a delightful and interesting site.
I am researching my Gt Gt Grandparents namely:-
ABRAHAM KINGSLEY ( I believe his parents were ABRAM / ANN KINGSLEY but not confirmed) who married ABIGAIL HANSCOMBE at PIRTON on 11th NOVEMBER 1854, daughter LAVINIA ELIZABETH KINGSLEY, Born DECEMBER 1865 PIRTON, Baptised 1st APRIL 1866
(This is my Gt Grandmother)
If anyone has any information on either ABIGAIL HANSCOMBE or ABRAHAM KINGSLEY I would be very interested in hearing from them.
