John Sale people     francis james James FRANCIS (1842-1925), was born and buried in Pirton, but spent most of his life in London where he was a schoolteacher and geologist.
He was a Fellow of the Geological Society and John Sale has some of his collection of fossils and geological specimens, although the best examples were donated to the National History Museum.

He originally came from the Forest of Dean & apparently saw the photograph of a Pirton women in the paper, decided that was the girl for him, so he came to Pirton to meet her and they married and lived in Wellbury Cottage, probably 1940s

He was married to Frank Weedon's sister. (His transport was a Fordson Major tractor and his assistant was Ossie Flint from Holwell.
