George Henry Hewitt

Was the Chaplain with the 8th Royal Berkshires only briefly - after going to France, he became Divisional Chaplain of 26th Division. He survived the war, despite an attack of malarial influenza when in Salonika.  He was vicar of Cobridge, and of Pirton near Hitchin.  His son was a Chaplain to the Queen from 1969 to 1982.

I found this information whilst searching on the web, it was on a remarkable and moving website created by Andrew Tatham.  The website contains his research of  one photograph taken during World War 1.  The photograph is of a group officers of the 8th Royal Berkshire Regiment taken at their training camp on Salisbury Plain in July 1915.

I recommend visiting this site www.andrewtatham.org.uk  George Henry Hewitt is second from the left in the second row from the front in the group photograph.

I asked Andrew for permission to link to his site which he readily gave and also wrote "I visited Pirton church a while ago and have got pictures of his grave and of his memorial in the church but what I am particularly interested in is finding further pictures of him - do you know of any source locally that might be able to help me out?" If you can help with this or any other information please email him via his website - I would be grateful to receive a copy at jontywild@pirton.org.uk
