PIRTON's WAR MEMORIAL

If anyone has photographs to go with any of these names, I would be very happy to add them.

This information **** was this is kindly provided by Lynda Smith who is the co-ordinator of Bedfordshire Family History Society's War Memorial Project and I really appreciate their permission to reproduce this historic and interesting information.

They are recording and researching all the memorials in the county and those in bordering parishes. The research is on www.roll-of-honour.com, specifically http://www.roll-of-honour.com/OtherCounties/Pirton.html.

Background Information from Lynda Smith:
You may notice some of the names and dates of death do not correspond with those on the War memorial. Apparently this is very common. I have also found another 4 men who were born in Pirton but are not on the memorial. Always difficult to know what criteria was used when putting names on the memorial. Names are: Frederick SKEYS, Francis Ralph TARRIER, Frederick John THOMPSON & Joseph WALKER. The first 3 names do not appear in the list in "Foot on 3 Daisies" but there are lots of Walkers, although no Joseph.

There are one or two I couldn't find - would appreciate any help. One of the "gems" is Albert Abbiss of the 7th Canadian Infantry. Lots of information available on him, including height, girth, eye colour etc from http://www.archives.ca/02/02010602_e.html which is the website of the National Archives of Canada.

If you can help add information or complete the missing gaps please contact Lynda Smith or Jonty Wild, Cats' Whiskers, 14a High Street, Pirton, Herts. SG5 3PS
