Pirton Sports & Social Club

Origins

The Pirton Sports and Social Club officially originated with an agreement signed with the Parish Council in 1994. This agreement gave the Sports and Social Club the right to use the Clubhouse and the Recreation Ground for, amongst other things, the playing of sports and the provision of a licensed bar. Prior to this of course a lot of voluntary work and thought had gone into the principles of a Sports and Social Club for the use of the village but it was the signing of the agreement that really started the ball rolling. That was seven years ago and a lot has changed since then.

The Clubhouse

Following the signing of the Agreement a considerable amount of work went into refitting the Clubhouse, which had been unused for a while, and extending the facilities. The Clubhouse now has a licensed bar that is open to members and guests on Friday evenings (8:30 - 11:00) and Sunday lunch times (12:00 - 2:00), a fully fitted kitchen and changing room facilities which are used by the sporting teams affiliated to the Club. This has been achieved through financial collaboration with the brewers Greene King together with a considerable amount of hard work from members and friends. As well as the regular opening times, the Clubhouse can be hired for private parties and is in use for this purpose approximately twice a month. Anyone hiring the Club for parties is able to make full use of the facilities including the bar. Anyone wishing to hire the Club should contact Lorna Sexton on 712867.

Pirton Summer Fair

In mid-Summer the Club has become the base for the annual Pirton Summer Fair, which sees many villagers and visitors gather on the Recreation Ground whilst making full use of the facilities of the Clubhouse. In the evening of the Summer Fair there is usually a full programme of musical entertainment to round the day off. This year's event is on July 14th so get the date in your diaries. Anyone who has worked as a volunteer manning the bar or selling food will confirm that it is an action packed day!

Fireworks Party

Another event that is hosted by the Club, and which is also almost a "tradition" after 3 years, takes place in November. This is when the Club collaborates with the Pirton School Association for the Bonfire Night party. The bonfire and fireworks are usually followed by live music from local bands and last year saw the first synchronisation of the fireworks with music. This year's event will be on November 3rd and will be publicised nearer the time.

Other Events

Throughout the time that the Club has been operating it has run a number of social events which are open to all. These have included a Murder Mystery Evening, Race Nights, Music Evenings, Casino Nights and Quizzes, amongst others. They provide a great opportunity to meet new people in pleasant surroundings or to get together with friends. Keep an eye out for these events as they are usually advertised on notice boards throughout the village or through the Pirton magazine.

Sports

Lea Sports Football Club and Pirton Cricket Club are affiliated to the Sports and Social Club and make full use of the clubhouse and its facilities. Both Clubs run a number of teams that cater for varying levels of age and competence from juniors through to veterans. There has been a trend with both Clubs for more and more villagers to get involved in the activities. This is especially true with the younger teams and is an indication of how the Sports and Social Club can benefit the village.

The club is always to support members who wish to form teams in other sporting fields. A recent example is where a number of members have arranged to get together in the Club House fortnightly for Bridge. The facilities are there, for example, to allow for darts and pool tournaments to take place. Anyone who has ideas for these kinds of activities should contact Dave Wallace on 711367 to discuss how the Club can help.

Membership  (Click here for details & printable membership form)

New members are always welcome and everyone in the village should by now have received a membership application form. The membership forms this year have been combined with the membership application forms for the Pumpkin Club - two village organisations working closely together. The Club is always keen to have new members - especially those who are willing and able to be actively involved in the running of the Club. This could mean taking part in one of the working parties that take place fairly regularly to make improvements and help with the general maintenance of the Clubhouse, manning the bar or contributing in some other way.

The Future

The Club is still progressing towards its vision of substantially improving its facilities for the benefit of the whole village. It is currently raising funds through the various events that you will see advertised around the village, through the income from hiring the Clubhouse and through the use of the bar. This is in addition to applying for various grants. The aim is to finance the building of a multi-sport hard court, improvements to the changing rooms and showers, the development of a cricket practice area and an extension to the Clubhouse to provide meeting room facilities.

The Sports and Social Club is there for the village to use but it does rely on the support of the villagers.
Please feel free to come along during the bar opening hours and see what an asset we have for the village.

As a reminder, the bar at the clubhouse is open on Friday evenings from
8:00 to 11:00 and on Sunday lunch times from 12:00 to 2:00.
Some of the best beer in Pirton! - We hope to see you there!
