Pumpkin Projects - The Blacksmith's Pond apron (Sept 2001 to 2003)

After a long time in planning, hopefully people will have noticed that phase 1 of the Pumpkin Club’s pond work has been completed. The rather tatty concrete has been removed and replaced by granite sets. The second phase should be completed shortly, which is the mounting of the Parish Council’s information board and then the last phase of this work will be the providing a bench seat, which will enable people to sit and quietly enjoy what must be one of the most attractive scenes in Pirton. We will probably wait until spring now before fixing the seat.

The project was originally conceived as a good way to spend some very generous donations that the Pumpkin Club received. The first was a result of a bequest by Les Smith who used to live at 77 High Street and the rest came from monies donated in memory of Alan Wilsher. The rest of the expenditure will come from the normal Pumpkin Club funds. It is intended to mount a suitable plaque to recognise the nature of the donations on the bench seat.

The weather when we did the work was atrocious, so we would particularly like to thank all the people who helped with the work, especially Michael Goddard, who was also involved in the planning. We were very grateful to all the people who kindly gave us coffee and tea and to the Camerons for the “loan” of their electricity and water. Also big thanks to who ever it was that laid the turf, we were going to honest!
