The Fox - High Street, Pirton - Snippets of HistoryI worked for and lived with Donald Jack Walker from 1985-1992. He was born at The Fox in 1922-sister to May Cook. - Christine Coombs .... My second great grandfather and grandmother were landlords of The Fox Inn, Pirton in the 1800's James Furr and Mary Lake. I know very little about them other than when they were born (and died in Mary's case) and their children: Caroline Elizabeth (my great grandmother), Harriet, Mary Ann, Frederick, Ellen Rose, Elizabeth Barbara, Joseph, and Elizabeth. Incidentally when we visited The Fox a couple of years ago the present landlord told us of a lady ghost that frequented the upstairs rooms of the inn, who apparently didn't like men - ? Mary). - Bob Lawrence .... As previously mentioned, I think I can clarify who Charles, Harold and Fred Furr are - Harold being my great grandfathers brother, Fred(erick) being his father (my great great grandfather (presuming we are talking about the same Fred Furr from Pirton, he is James Furr's son; James previously was landlord of The Fox Inn in Pirton)) - Dan Furr The Ghost Hi. I stumbled on the Pirton website yesterday and found a bit about the Fox and the ghost of a white lady upstairs. My father (Peter Wishart and Rita my mother) were the landlords of the Fox about 1978/79, I can't remember the exact dates but I can confirm the haunting. I was 8 or 9 at the time and the only reason we left is because of the ghost except it wasn't a woman but an 18th century soldier. The ghost is upstairs and kept standing at the foot of my bed with his left shoulder towards me and then he would turn his head to look me straight in the eye (which scared the hell out of me at the time). He wears a red coat with a long rifle over his shoulder and holds a pistol. He wears a white and gold mitre on his head and has a blank look on his face. I never saw a white lady but if they say she is there then I believe them, because I know there is at least one ghost in the Fox. I've wanted to know who he is since then but no-one else seems to have seen him that I know of. There was a strange day a few months before we left when my mother invited an aunt up from London (she is a medium) to have a look around but the moment she stepped into the main bar her face contorted in fright and she walked straight back out again and demanded that my father take her back to the train station in Luton. She wouldn't stay even for 5 minutes, saying that there is a presence that scared her too much. I hope I've helped a little and if you ever throw any light on the ghosts (no pun intended) I would be grateful if you could let me know. - Andrew Wishart
